The nine forums explored the concrete living situations of migrant elders on the basis of the following key questions:

  2. To what extent did the sponsor benefit from the project (e.g. what are the economic opportunities)?
  3. Were older migrants, both male and female, involved in the planning / implementation of the project? If so, what strategy was used and how well did it succeed?
  4. How is the project perceived by society at large (e.g. what are the social or cultural opportunities)?
  5. To what extent were gender issues taken into account?
  6. What general recommendations – political, practical or (if applicable) scientifical – can be derived from the project?

Supplementary key discussion questions for Forum 3 ("The diverse migrant elders' community - impact and chances"):

  • What distinguishes each of the various immigrant groups, and to what extent do these distinguishing features require  separate approaches?
  • Where are there gaps in the research and/or where should more research be done?

Supplementary key discussion questions for Forum 7 ("Migrant elders – research in Europe")

  • Where is more research needed?
  • What is the degree of willingness to cooperate within  a European research network?
  • What topics should European research concentrate on?
  • What are the conditions for research in each country?
  • How could additional research be fostered?

Supplementary discussion topics for Forum 9 ("Migrant elders – gender matters?"):

  • How do the needs of male and female migrant elders differ?
  • What might some of the specific solutions concerning the issues of social participation, housing, health and leisure look like?
  • Where are research gaps and/or in which fields should research be done more intensively?

On the second day of the conference, the results of the various forums were presented at the plenary meeting, with the presenters covering the following key questions:

  • Which topics were presented?
  • What were the main aspects? Are there country-specific differences?
  • Can any main trends/developments be derived from the practical examples?
